East Coast States Also Need More Parliamentary Seats, Says PAS

PAS is open to supporting an increase in parliamentary representation for East Coast states, though the party insists any expansion must be equitable and conducted through appropriate channels, according to party communications chief Fadhli Shuhaimi.

Fadhli's remarks broaden the debate on parliamentary reapportionment beyond Sabah and Sarawak, which have long sought additional seats to reflect their populations. The PAS official indicated the party would not oppose similar provisions for East Coast peninsular states if proper procedures are followed.

"We have no problem agreeing to an increase if it is fair for everyone and goes through proper discussion," Fadhli said, signalling conditional support for a broader reapportionment exercise.

The statement reflects ongoing discussions within Malaysian political circles about redistributing parliamentary seats to better reflect demographic changes and population growth across different regions. Any such changes would require constitutional amendments and consensus among key political stakeholders.

East Coast states have previously argued that their populations warrant greater representation in Parliament, bringing them into alignment with calls from Sabah and Sarawak for enhanced political voice in the federal legislature.
