East Malaysia-posted doctors face October 7 reporting deadline
Malaysia's Health Ministry has set an October 7 deadline for newly assigned doctors to report for duty in East Malaysia, as authorities address widespread no-shows affecting the region's healthcare workforce.

The Health Ministry launched its doctor placement process on Monday as part of ongoing efforts to staff medical facilities across Sabah and Sarawak. The initiative comes following reports that approximately 76 percent of assigned doctors failed to report for their postings, creating significant gaps in the region's healthcare capacity.
Under the current directive, all doctors assigned to positions in East Malaysia must formally report for duty by October 7. The ministry said the placement process is proceeding as scheduled, with officials reviewing compliance among newly assigned medical personnel.
The high rate of no-shows has raised concerns about healthcare service delivery in East Malaysia, where doctor shortages have long been a challenge. The deadline represents the ministry's attempt to ensure staffing levels meet operational requirements across government health facilities in both states.
It remains unclear what measures the ministry plans to implement against doctors who fail to meet the reporting deadline. The placement process is expected to continue beyond October 7 as the ministry works to fill remaining vacancies across East Malaysian healthcare institutions.
