Easter attacks verdict marks step forward, but full truth remains elusive

The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka has expressed cautious approval following court verdicts against those convicted in connection with the devastating Easter Sunday attacks of 2019, while emphasizing that judicial proceedings represent only a partial accounting of what transpired.

Fr. Jude Krishantha, a senior Catholic representative, indicated that although the convictions constitute an important legal milestone, significant questions remain about the full scope and circumstances of the coordinated bombings. The attacks, which targeted churches and hotels across the country, claimed over 250 lives and injured hundreds more.

Church officials have stressed the importance of ongoing investigations and disclosure of information that could shed light on overlooked dimensions of the case. The Catholic community has maintained that achieving genuine closure for survivors and bereaved families requires more than courtroom judgments alone.

The verdicts follow years of legal proceedings since the attacks in April 2019, which prompted widespread national trauma and prompted major security reviews. Religious leaders continue to call for institutional transparency and comprehensive accountability measures to prevent similar incidents.
