Eastern Visayas faces water shortage as nine irrigation systems decline

TACLOBAN CITY—Nine of the 11 major irrigation systems monitored by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Eastern Visayas are operating below normal water levels, the agency disclosed in an advisory issued September 11.
The declining water availability has forced the NIA to modify water distribution schedules to farmers across the region. Officials attributed the shortage to prevailing weather conditions affecting the area's water supply capacity.
The water level concerns come at a critical time for agricultural operations in Eastern Visayas, one of the country's key farming regions. The NIA's adjusted delivery schedules are intended to ensure equitable distribution of available water resources among farming communities dependent on these irrigation systems.
