Power cooperatives serving Eastern Visayas alerted customers Monday to brace for possible service interruptions as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) escalated alert levels for the Visayas grid amid supply constraints.
The NGCP issued both red and yellow alerts for the region, signaling a critical shortage of available generation capacity. Under worst-case scenarios, the utility may resort to Manual Load Dropping (MLD) between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. to manage demand and prevent system collapse.
MLD is a controlled measure where specific areas are deliberately disconnected from the grid in rotation to balance electricity supply with demand during peak consumption hours. The evening window identified by NGCP represents the period of highest electricity usage across the Visayas region.
Electric cooperatives urged consumers to reduce non-essential power consumption and prepare contingency plans. The alerts underscore ongoing challenges in the country's power generation capacity during periods of high demand.
