ECI directs poll workers to restore eligible voters omitted from rolls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued directions to booth-level officers (BLOs) across the country to conduct a comprehensive review of deleted voter lists and restore the eligibility of qualified citizens who may have been erroneously struck off the electoral rolls.

In a recent communication, the ECI outlined a systematic approach to address gaps in voter registration, emphasizing the need to identify and re-enroll those who meet eligibility criteria but were inadvertently excluded from the voting rolls. The directive underscores the Commission's commitment to ensuring comprehensive and inclusive voter participation in democratic processes.

To facilitate timely completion of this corrective exercise, the ECI has suggested that BLOs cover a minimum of 20-25 electors per week, allowing them to complete the full scope of work within approximately one month. This benchmarked pace aims to balance thoroughness with efficiency in the re-enrollment process.

The move is seen as an effort to address longstanding concerns about voter deletion anomalies and to strengthen the integrity of electoral rolls. Election observers have noted that periodic cleansing of voter lists, while necessary, can sometimes result in eligible voters being mistakenly removed, necessitating corrective measures.

Booth-level officers have been instructed to engage directly with potentially affected voters and verify their eligibility based on prescribed criteria before re-enrolling them on the official rolls, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to electoral guidelines throughout the process.
