ECL seals Raniganj colliery sections as precaution against ground subsidence

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has begun precautionary sealing operations at sections of Khandra Colliery in the Raniganj coal belt following the emergence of surface cracks and subsidence in the region. The decision to implement the protective measures was prompted by geological concerns identified in recent weeks at the site.

The ground deformation was first documented on July 28 in an area where several unauthorised structures and illegal occupants have established themselves. ECL officials identified the subsidence and surface cracking as potential safety hazards requiring immediate intervention to prevent further deterioration or risk to personnel and nearby settlements.

The precautionary sealing process involves systematically closing off affected mine sections to prevent further underground voids from expanding and causing additional surface damage. Such measures are standard protocol in coal mining operations when geological instability is detected, particularly in areas with existing encroachments that complicate safety management.

The Raniganj coal belt remains one of India's significant coal-producing regions, and incidents of subsidence have periodically affected areas with legacy mining activities. ECL's intervention reflects the ongoing challenges of managing abandoned or legacy coal mining sites, especially where unauthorised occupation has occurred over decades of operations.
