KUALA LUMPUR — The long-awaited East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is on track for a mid-December launch, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced, as the project enters its final operational phase.
The ECRL will kick off services on December 12 with a 30 per cent promotional discount on Economy Transit fares to attract commuters during its initial phase, Loke said. The concessional pricing underscores efforts to encourage public uptake of the new rail corridor linking the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.
Freight services will commence alongside passenger operations, maximising the infrastructure's commercial potential from day one. This dual-service approach is designed to generate revenue streams across both logistics and transportation segments, supporting the project's long-term financial viability.
The ECRL represents a significant addition to Malaysia's transport infrastructure, reducing travel times between major cities and enhancing regional connectivity. The project has faced multiple delays since its initial conception, making the December timeline a crucial milestone for the government's infrastructure development agenda.
Further details regarding ticketing systems, station operations, and the full service schedule are expected to be released as the launch date approaches.
