Ecuador's Ivonne Baki enters race for UN secretary-general role

GENEVA — Ecuador has entered the global competition to lead the United Nations, with diplomat Ivonne Baki formally joining the race to become secretary-general, according to documents released on Tuesday.

Baki's candidacy marks the eighth entry into what is shaping up to be a competitive selection process to replace Portugal's Antonio Guterres when his current term concludes next year.

The secretary-general position, one of the world's most prominent international roles, traditionally sees candidates from various regions put forward their credentials to UN member states. The selection process involves nominations from countries and consultation among permanent Security Council members before a final vote by the General Assembly.

With multiple candidates now formally in the race, the contest to helm the 193-member organization is expected to intensify in coming months. The new secretary-general will face mounting global challenges ranging from geopolitical tensions to climate change and sustainable development.
