ED arrests sixth suspect in multi-state digital fraud scheme
The Enforcement Directorate has made its sixth arrest in connection with a sophisticated pan-India digital arrest fraud operation. The investigation has uncovered a complex money laundering network involving hundreds of bank accounts and illegal foreign currency conversion.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested a sixth individual in its ongoing investigation into an elaborate digital arrest fraud racket operating across India. The case centres on cheating victims through fake law enforcement threats delivered via digital platforms, with the latest arrest marking a significant development in dismantling the organised network.
According to ED findings, proceeds from at least one victim in Goa were systematically laundered through approximately 400 bank accounts. The money was subsequently withdrawn in cash and converted into foreign currency using Reserve Bank of India-licensed money changers, indicating a well-coordinated mechanism to obscure the origins and movement of illicit funds.
The investigation has revealed the scale of coordination required to execute the fraud scheme. Money changers licenced by the RBI became witting or unwitting conduits in the currency conversion phase, suggesting either deliberate collaboration or inadequate compliance verification in these transactions.
The ED's successive arrests indicate the agency is systematically dismantling the criminal network responsible for the scheme. The pan-India nature of the operation underscores the challenge posed by organised digital fraud rings that exploit multiple jurisdictions to evade detection.
The case highlights vulnerabilities in India's digital financial ecosystem and the money laundering safeguards surrounding authorised money changers. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify additional suspects and recover defrauded funds.
