The Enforcement Directorate has escalated its legal battle over the NewsClick case, filing a petition in the Supreme Court to challenge a high court's decision to quash the money laundering investigation against the news platform. The federal agency contends that the high court's dismissal was premature and procedurally flawed, as it rejected the case without conducting a thorough examination of the money laundering allegations on their merits. According to the ED's submission, the high court also caused unwarranted delay, taking over five months to pronounce its judgment in the matter, which compounds the prejudicial nature of its order. The case centres on allegations of illicit financial transactions and foreign fund flows related to NewsClick's operations. The ED's challenge to the high court decision marks a significant escalation in the dispute, bringing the matter before India's apex court for final adjudication on whether the investigation should proceed and whether the lower court's reasoning for dismissal was legally sound.
