ED conducts multi-state crackdown on online betting payment networks

The Enforcement Directorate intensified its investigation into illegal online betting networks with coordinated raids across 12 locations on Wednesday. The operations targeted payment companies and chartered accountants suspected of facilitating financial transactions for underground betting syndicates.

Raid teams were deployed across four states, with the highest concentration in Maharashtra where five locations were searched. Delhi-NCR accounted for four locations, while Rajasthan saw two operations. A single location in Gujarat was also covered as part of the sweeping action.

The multi-state operation reflects a sustained government push against the shadow economy generated by online gambling platforms. Authorities believe payment processors and financial intermediaries have played a crucial role in routing illicit betting proceeds through the formal financial system.

Preliminary investigations suggest the network involved substantial sums, with officials examining transaction records, digital devices, and financial documents seized during the raids. The ED is coordinating with other financial intelligence agencies to trace the complete chain of transactions and identify upstream and downstream conspirators involved in the betting operation.

This crackdown follows heightened regulatory attention to online gambling in India, where state governments have been increasingly stringent on illegal betting activities conducted through digital platforms.
