ED officer, head constable arrested for extorting Rs 5 lakh bribe in Lucknow

A Central Bureau of Investigation team apprehended an Enforcement Directorate official stationed at the Lucknow zonal office and a head constable on bribery charges, officials said Monday. The two were caught red-handed accepting Rs 5 lakh from a complainant, according to CBI sources.

The alleged extortion scheme involved soliciting the bribe ostensibly to provide relief or assistance in an ED case, investigators said. The complaint had reportedly been issued two summonses in connection with the matter prior to the bribery attempt.

The CBI registered the case following a formal complaint detailing how the ED official and the head constable had demanded the money in exchange for intervention in the investigation against the complainant's father. The arrest marks the latest in a series of corruption cases involving central investigating agencies in Uttar Pradesh.

The arrested officials have been taken into custody for further interrogation. The CBI has launched a detailed investigation to determine whether others were involved in the alleged extortion racket and to recover any additional proceeds from the scheme.
