ED raids 16 locations in crackdown on areca nut smuggling via Myanmar border
The Enforcement Directorate has launched coordinated searches across multiple sites as part of an investigation into an organised smuggling operation moving dried areca nut across the Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram.

The Directorate has alleged that dried areca nut consignments originating from foreign sources were transported overland to the Indo-Myanmar border region opposite Champhai in Mizoram as part of a systematically operated smuggling network. According to the agency, the contraband was ferried across the Tiau river at Zokhawthar in small quantities, deliberately circumventing the Land Customs Station to evade detection and duties. The searches were conducted across 16 locations linked to the suspected smuggling operation. The ED's investigation indicates the racket was well-organised, with operators utilising the remote river crossing point to move goods in fragmented consignments rather than bulk shipments. Officials allege this approach was designed to reduce the risk of detection at formal border checkpoints. Areca nut, commonly known as betel nut, is a controlled commodity subject to duties and import regulations. The investigation underscores persistent challenges faced by Indian authorities in securing the porous Myanmar border and combating transnational smuggling operations in the Northeast.
