ED seeks fugitive economic offender status for Modi, Choksi wives

The Enforcement Directorate has decided to pursue legal action to have Ami Nirav Modi and Priti Choksi declared fugitive economic offenders under provisions of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act. The two women are believed to be residing in the United States and Belgium respectively, according to ED officials.

The financial crimes agency will file distinct applications against each woman as part of its ongoing investigation into the high-profile financial fraud cases involving the two diamantaires. The move comes as authorities seek to expand the scope of action against associates and family members of the accused promoters who remain outside India's jurisdiction.

The Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, enacted in 2018, enables authorities to confiscate assets and prevent individuals accused of economic offences worth Rs 100 crore or more from accessing Indian courts if they refuse to return voluntarily. The designation would restrict their ability to operate bank accounts, access property, and conduct financial transactions within India's borders.

Both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi are facing multiple charges related to alleged fraud cases that have drawn significant attention from Indian law enforcement agencies. The ED's initiative to pursue their spouses represents an attempt to tighten the noose around their financial networks and assets.
