The Enforcement Directorate has uncovered a sophisticated smuggling operation involving areca nut trafficking routed through Mizoram, with organizers operating from Myanmar. The cross-border network has been moving substantial quantities of the commodity in what investigators describe as a large-scale operation.
As part of its ongoing investigation, the ED has attached a hotel, residential land, and other properties located in and around Champhai, a town in eastern Mizoram bordering Myanmar. The seized assets represent the agency's efforts to dismantle the financial infrastructure supporting the smuggling enterprise.
Champhai, strategically positioned on the India-Myanmar border, has long been a transit point for illicit trade. The seizure of multiple properties in the area suggests the network had established significant operational infrastructure within India to facilitate the movement and distribution of smuggled areca nut.
The investigation highlights the persistent challenge of cross-border smuggling in India's northeastern states, where porous boundaries and established smuggling routes continue to attract criminal networks. The ED's action underscores efforts to disrupt these operations and trace the financial proceeds of smuggling activities.
