EDC eyes P70-billion Leyte geothermal plant modernization push

TACLOBAN CITY — Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is undertaking a feasibility study for a P70-billion redevelopment program targeting its established geothermal operations in Leyte, according to company officials.
The modernization initiative aims to bolster the generating capacity of the aging facilities by 200 to 400 megawatts while extending the productive lifespan of the province's long-established geothermal resources. EDC Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Francis Giles Puno outlined the company's plans during recent discussions about the project's scope and potential impact.
The proposed upgrade represents a significant investment in the renewable energy infrastructure that has been supplying power from Leyte's geothermal reserves for several decades. If approved, the redevelopment would enhance the facility's contribution to the national energy grid while maintaining operations in the region.
EdC's evaluation of the project is expected to provide clearer timelines and implementation strategies for the ambitious modernization effort, which comes as the Philippines seeks to expand its renewable energy generation capacity.
