Edcom 2 calls for stronger early childhood, primary curricula

MANILA — A three-quarter majority of Grade 1 students are struggling with reading proficiency, according to findings from the Department of Education, prompting calls for curriculum reform from the nation's top education policymakers.

The Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom 2) has recommended that DepEd prioritize strengthening foundational learning programs in early childhood development and primary education to address the widespread literacy gap.

The commission's intervention reflects growing concern over basic reading competency among younger learners, which education officials warn could have cascading effects on academic performance in higher grade levels.

DepEd has not yet issued an official response to the Edcom 2 recommendations, though the agency has previously outlined initiatives aimed at improving literacy outcomes in Philippine schools.
