The Ministry of Education has commenced implementation of a coordinated action plan to standardise school operating procedures during periods of air quality deterioration caused by regional haze, officials said on Monday.

Under the new framework, schools will follow unified guidelines for adjusting operations, including decisions on outdoor activities, extended breaks, and potential class suspensions when air quality reaches hazardous levels. The ministry is working to ensure consistent protocols across all educational institutions, from primary schools through secondary establishments.

The action plan represents an effort to balance academic continuity with student health and safety during the haze season, which typically affects Malaysia from August through October as neighbouring regions experience agricultural burning.

The ministry has directed schools to remain alert to air quality index readings and coordinate with local health authorities when implementing any operational changes. Schools are also required to maintain communication with parents and guardians regarding decisions affecting the school calendar.

Education officials have emphasised that the standardised procedures will help reduce confusion and ensure all students receive consistent protection during haze episodes, while minimising disruption to the academic year.
