The dual-use farming method allows panels to generate electricity while simultaneously creating cooler microclimates beneath them, reducing water evaporation from soil and plant leaves.

The approach capitalizes on Egypt's abundant solar resources and the shade effect created by elevated panel arrays. By positioning crops such as vegetables and leafy greens beneath solar installations, farmers can significantly reduce irrigation requirements compared to conventional open-field cultivation in the harsh desert environment. The cooler conditions beneath the panels extend the growing season and improve crop yields.

Egypt faces mounting pressure on its freshwater supplies as the Nile River's flow diminishes due to upstream dam construction and climate change. Agriculture accounts for approximately 80 percent of the nation's water consumption, making water-efficient farming techniques increasingly critical for food security. Solar agrivoltaics—the integration of solar energy generation with agriculture—offers a potential solution that addresses multiple resource constraints simultaneously.
