Eight awarded Merdeka recognition for contributions to nation

Eight individuals and organisations have been recognised with the Merdeka Award, Malaysia's prestigious honour celebrating exceptional service to the nation. The recipients span diverse fields, reflecting the breadth of excellence being celebrated across Malaysian society. The awards acknowledge achievements in sports, environmental conservation, academic research and humanitarian work. Badminton champion Nicol David, widely regarded as one of the sport's greatest players, receives the recognition alongside Mercy Malaysia, the international humanitarian organisation founded and headquartered in Malaysia. Chan Eng Heng, a leading figure in turtle conservation efforts, was also among those honoured for his decades-long commitment to protecting the country's marine species. Linguistics scholar Asmah Omar, recognised for pioneering research in the Malay language and its development, receives the award alongside Paralympic gold medallist Cheah Liek Hou, whose athletic achievements have brought international recognition to Malaysian sports.
