Eight police officers detained over suspected kratom trafficking involvement

Eight members of the Royal Malaysia Police have been held in custody as part of an investigation into suspected kratom trafficking activities, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Seven of the detained officers are stationed at various branches within the Sentul police district headquarters (IPD), while one additional officer is attached to the Brickfields IPD. The investigation marks the latest in a series of enforcement actions targeting drug-related offences involving banned or restricted substances in the Klang Valley region.

The detentions come as authorities continue to intensify crackdowns on the distribution and trafficking of kratom, a botanical substance derived from the Mitragyna speciosa plant. The leaf is controlled under Malaysia's Dangerous Drugs Act and its possession, trafficking, or cultivation without authorisation is prohibited.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police expected to provide further details as the case develops. Authorities have not released the identities of the detained officers or additional information regarding the scope of the investigation at this stage.
