Eight students lost their lives after drowning off Diveagar beach in Maharashtra's Raigad district during a picnic organised by a private coaching institute. The group, comprising 48 people including 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers, had assembled at the beach located within the Dighi coastal police station jurisdiction when the incident occurred.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragedy. Preliminary reports indicate that several students ventured into the sea, where they were caught in unexpected currents. Despite immediate efforts by accompanying staff and bystanders to rescue those in distress, eight students could not be saved.
The incident has raised serious questions about safety measures and supervision during educational outings to coastal destinations. Raigad district, which experiences volatile sea conditions, has witnessed similar incidents in the past. Authorities have indicated that a comprehensive review of safety guidelines for student excursions will be undertaken.
Families of the deceased students have been notified, and local administration has announced assistance to the bereaved. The coaching institute has temporarily suspended all external activities as it cooperates with investigating agencies. Coastal police have appealed to the public to exercise caution while visiting beaches, particularly during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons when water conditions are unpredictable.
