Eighty-eight Philippine communities declared calamity zones amid monsoon

MANILA — Severe weather conditions have prompted Philippine disaster authorities to declare a calamity status across 88 communities, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The affected cities and municipalities face the combined impact of the enhanced southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, along with associated cyclonic disturbances and other atmospheric conditions. The calamity declarations were announced Friday based on data compiled by the disaster management agency.

Under a state of calamity declaration, local government units gain expanded authority to access emergency funds and expedite relief operations. The status also facilitates coordination between national and local agencies in delivering humanitarian assistance and conducting rescue operations in affected regions.

The NDRRMC's declaration reflects ongoing monitoring of weather patterns and their impacts across the country.
