CALAPAN CITY — A mass fish kill has struck portions of Odiongan's coastline, prompting local officials to point to El Niño conditions as the primary cause. The Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) has linked the mortality event to sustained heat waves and elevated seawater temperatures characteristic of the current El Niño phase affecting the region.

According to Dally Jean Florendo of the Odiongan MAO, the fish kill has impacted coastal communities including Barangay Canduyong and neighboring areas. The exact extent of livestock losses and affected species remain under assessment by municipal authorities.

El Niño-induced warming has been documented across Philippine waters in recent months, creating conditions of thermal stress for marine ecosystems. Rising seawater temperatures can deplete oxygen levels and disrupt fish habitats, leading to mass mortality events particularly in shallow coastal zones.

The Odiongan MAO is continuing its investigation and monitoring of the situation. Affected fishing communities may seek assistance from provincial and national disaster response agencies as initial damage assessments proceed.
