The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has reported that El Niño conditions are currently affecting the livelihoods and daily activities of over 81,000 residents across seven districts throughout the island nation. The weather phenomenon, which brings altered precipitation patterns and temperature fluctuations across the Indian Ocean region, has prompted heightened monitoring from disaster management officials.

El Niño episodes are characterized by warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, with cascading effects on weather systems across South and Southeast Asia. For Sri Lanka, such conditions typically influence monsoon patterns and can trigger drought conditions in some regions while causing excess rainfall in others.

The seven affected districts have experienced varying impacts depending on their geographic location and vulnerability to weather-related disruptions.
