SAN FRANCISCO, AGUSAN DEL SUR — The intensifying El Niño phenomenon has dealt a significant blow to rice production in Agusan del Sur, with provincial authorities reporting widespread disruptions to the July cropping season across the region.
Approximately 21,600 rice farmers have been unable to plant their crops as scheduled, according to Provincial Agriculturist Armando Valiente. The delayed planting affects more than 35,000 hectares of rice-growing land, representing a substantial portion of the province's agricultural output during this critical period.
The primary driver of the disruption is the persistent dry conditions brought by El Niño, which have significantly constrained water availability across the province. Dwindling water supplies have made it impossible for farmers to flood their paddies, a necessary prerequisite for rice cultivation in the region.
