MANILA — El Niño weather patterns have prompted authorities to declare a state of calamity in 106 cities and municipalities across the Philippines, affecting more than 388,000 residents, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported Monday.

The Cagayan region accounts for the majority of calamity declarations, with 66 areas in the northern province placed under the emergency status. The widespread declarations reflect mounting concerns over drought conditions and water shortages affecting agricultural production and daily water supply across vulnerable communities.

The state of calamity declaration enables local government units to access emergency funds and implement measures to address immediate humanitarian needs. It also facilitates faster procurement of relief supplies and expedites assistance programs for affected populations.

El Niño episodes typically bring drier conditions to the Philippines, particularly affecting northern and central regions. Officials continue to monitor weather patterns and coordinate relief efforts with local authorities to mitigate the impact on farming communities and urban centers facing water stress.
