Agricultural areas throughout Western Visayas, including Iloilo province, are bearing the brunt of the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which has inflicted significant economic damage on the farming sector nationwide. According to the Department of Agriculture's latest situation report, the weather pattern has generated P8.57 billion in agricultural losses across the country, with more than 288,000 farmers directly affected by reduced yields and crop failures.
The Western Visayas region, a key agricultural producer for the Philippines, has emerged as one of the hardest-hit areas as prolonged dry conditions strain water supplies and damage crops dependent on consistent rainfall. Farmers across multiple provinces are grappling with diminished harvests and increased operational costs as they attempt to sustain production amid unfavorable weather.
The El Niño situation has prompted the Department of Agriculture to intensify monitoring efforts and provide support to affected farming communities. Officials continue to assess the full extent of damage and coordinate relief measures to help farmers cope with production losses and maintain food security in the region.
El Niño conditions, characterized by warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, typically bring drier weather to the Philippines during their occurrence, creating substantial challenges for rain-dependent agricultural operations across major farming zones.
