MANILA — El Niño has impacted over 451,000 individuals across the Philippines, according to a situational report released Wednesday by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). The affected population encompasses 121,185 families spread across several key regions including Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa.
The agricultural sector has been particularly hard hit by the dry weather conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon. The NDRRMC documented that more than 215,000 farmers and fisherfolk are among those experiencing adverse effects from the climate event.
The council's assessment, compiled as of October 14, provides a snapshot of the ongoing drought conditions gripping portions of the country. Regional authorities have been monitoring the situation as communities and livelihood sectors work to adapt to the extended dry period.
El Niño episodes typically bring below-normal rainfall to the Philippines, particularly affecting agricultural production and water availability. The NDRRMC continues to coordinate with local government units and disaster response agencies to address emerging humanitarian and livelihood concerns related to the phenomenon.
