El Nino Climate Pattern Poses Risk to India's Sugar Output

India's sugar sector is bracing for potential supply pressures as El Nino weather conditions threaten crop yields across key growing regions. The climate phenomenon is expected to impact agricultural output at a time when global sugar prices have climbed to near-record levels, adding pressure on both domestic producers and consumers.

Industry participants surveyed by Bloomberg project India's gross sugar production will fall within a range of 29 to 31 million tonnes for the marketing year ending September 2027. The estimates reflect concerns about weather volatility and its impact on sugarcane cultivation, particularly in states that account for the bulk of national output.

The supply outlook comes as international sugar prices remain near multi-year peaks, driven by global production challenges and strong demand. For India, a significant sugar producer and exporter, tighter domestic supplies could complicate efforts to meet both domestic consumption and export commitments.

Miller, trader and analyst assessments indicate the sector will continue monitoring monsoon patterns and weather developments closely. Any significant deviation from normal rainfall or temperature patterns could further squeeze production, potentially supporting prices but raising concerns about consumer affordability and industrial demand.
