An elderly couple in Sikandirabad, Bulandshahr district, has been separated among their four adult sons, with two children each taking responsibility for one parent. The arrangement has left the 70-year-old wife of the household struggling to meet basic needs and afford medical treatment for her declining health.
When the woman's health deteriorated and she required funds for treatment and daily expenses, she approached her husband for financial assistance. The 75-year-old initially resisted providing support, prompting intervention from local counselling services.
Following counselling sessions with the women's cell, the husband agreed to provide monthly maintenance of ₹5,000 to ensure his wife's welfare. The decision comes as families across rural and semi-urban areas of North India continue to grapple with questions of elder care and spousal support amid changing social structures.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of elderly individuals, particularly women, in joint family arrangements. Legal and social welfare authorities have increasingly intervened in such matters to ensure basic rights and dignity for senior citizens.
