Elderly driver killed as floodwaters sweep car away in Rembau

SEREMBAN — A tragic drowning incident in Rembau has claimed the life of a 74-year-old Malaysian driver whose Perodua Myvi was overwhelmed by floodwaters, authorities said Wednesday.

The elderly man was attempting to navigate through flood-affected areas when his vehicle became engulfed by the rising water levels, rendering him unable to escape the submerged car. Emergency responders discovered the vehicle after receiving distress reports, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a separate rescue operation on the same day, the Fire and Rescue Department successfully extracted an Indonesian national who had also found himself stranded in floodwaters. The rescued individual was treated for minor injuries and handed over to the relevant authorities.

The dual incidents underscore the dangers posed by seasonal flooding in the region, with authorities urging residents and travellers to avoid flood-prone areas and to exercise extreme caution during heavy rainfall. The Fire and Rescue Department has advised the public not to attempt crossing flooded roads, regardless of vehicle type or perceived water depth.
