The retiree was targeted by scammers who deployed convincing pop-up alerts mimicking legitimate technology companies, prompting him to call a fraudulent support number. During the extended interaction, the perpetrators gained access to his computer and convinced him to disclose sensitive banking details, including credentials for a joint OCBC account he shares with his wife.

The scammers subsequently attempted to transfer substantial sums from the account. The victim only recognized the severity of his mistake after the transactions were initiated, at which point he moved to halt the unauthorized transfers.

The case reflects a growing trend of tech support scams targeting older adults across the region. Authorities have repeatedly warned that legitimate technology companies do not initiate contact via pop-up alerts or unsolicited phone calls requesting account credentials or remote computer access.

Police and financial institutions urge residents to verify contact attempts independently, avoid sharing banking details with unsolicited callers, and report suspicious activities immediately. Many banks now offer transaction alerts and account protection measures specifically designed to prevent fraud losses among vulnerable populations.
