Election Commission caps voter deletion requests to curb bulk filings

The Election Commission of India has moved to regulate the filing of bulk deletion requests from electoral rolls by placing caps on Form 7 applications submitted by individual electors. The new restrictions aim to prevent the systematic abuse of objection procedures that had drawn scrutiny in recent months.

Under the revised framework, each individual elector may file a maximum of 10 Form 7 applications throughout an entire claims and objections period. During the continuous updating of electoral rolls, the limit has been set at five applications per calendar month per individual.

The EC's decision targets the submission of unsubstantiated mass objections, which had created operational challenges for election officials across states and inconvenienced legitimate voters. By implementing application caps, the poll authority seeks to maintain the integrity of voter registration processes while reducing administrative burden.

The Election Commission has instructed all state chief electoral officers to implement the new system immediately. The move reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral management practices and ensure that voter rolls remain accurate and representative of eligible electors.
