Election Commission eases voter registration requirements after SIR controversy

The Election Commission of India has announced a significant change to its voter registration procedures, eliminating the need for supplementary documentation in states where the Summary Inclusive Report (SIR) process has been finalized. Under the new directive, applicants filing Form-6—the standard application for new voter registration—will no longer be required to submit Annexure-D, an additional declaration form, in these jurisdictions. The modification has been implemented in the online Form-6 system to streamline the registration process.

The decision follows sustained debate regarding the voter registration procedure and the role of SIR in electoral preparations. Election Commission officials indicated that the revised approach addresses concerns about administrative burden while maintaining electoral integrity.
