Election Commission launches special voter enrollment drive for youth, first-timers

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed chief electoral officers across states to undertake a special enrollment drive targeting first-time voters and citizens previously excluded from electoral registers. The directive comes following completion of the Summary Inclusive Roll (SIR) process, which forms the basis of voter verification and registration.

According to the ECI's communication, booth-level officers (BLOs) have been tasked with conducting house-to-house visits in their respective constituencies to identify and register eligible voters who may have been missed during regular enrollment cycles. The initiative aims to maximize voter participation and ensure that all eligible citizens, particularly young adults reaching voting age, are registered on electoral rolls.

The special drive represents the ECI's effort to address gaps in voter registration that typically emerge after the completion of the SIR, which consolidates voter data across constituencies. By deploying BLOs directly to households, the commission seeks to capture voters from marginalized communities and those in remote or poorly surveyed areas who may have slipped through standard registration processes.

Election officials have been directed to maintain detailed records of newly enrolled voters and ensure proper documentation. The exercise is expected to strengthen the integrity of electoral rolls and facilitate smoother conduct of elections when they are announced. State-level authorities have been asked to monitor the progress of the enrollment campaign and report findings to the central ECI office.
