Election Commission launches youth outreach drive ahead of 2029 general elections

The Election Commission has unveiled an expanded campaign to familiarize younger voters with India's electoral process in the run-up to the 2029 general elections. The drive aims to cultivate informed voters and future democratic advocates who can mobilize communities around electoral participation.

The poll authority will focus on students in classes 9 through 12, along with college and university enrollees, reaching across all 4,123 assembly constituencies. Officials said the target demographic comprises approximately 14.78 crore citizens aged 18-26, including 7.98 crore males, 6.79 crore females, and 9,000 individuals identifying as third gender.

Central to the outreach strategy is the establishment of 50,000 Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs), with 10 clubs designated per assembly constituency. These bodies will operate within 15 lakh schools nationwide while also engaging 70,000 colleges and 1,400 universities. The ELCs framework, first introduced in 2018 as part of the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, has been identified as an effective mechanism for voter education initiatives.

Election Commission officials framed the initiative as a foundational step toward strengthening democratic institutions by creating a cohort of voters equipped to understand and participate meaningfully in the electoral process.
