Election Commission maintains Form 6 structure, shifts online filing from October 21

The Election Commission of India has clarified its position on electoral documentation procedures in a submission to the Supreme Court, stating that Form 6 will retain its existing structure despite administrative changes to filing mechanisms.

Under the revised framework, the statutory information report filing process will be digitized and conducted separately from the declaration component, which has been a subject of judicial scrutiny. The Election Commission indicated that the transition to the new online system is scheduled to commence from October 21.

The distinction between the declaration element and the statutory information report represents a significant procedural shift aimed at streamlining the filing process for candidates and political parties. This separation is intended to enhance clarity and efficiency in electoral documentation while maintaining the substantive requirements of Form 6.

The Election Commission's submission addresses concerns raised during Supreme Court proceedings regarding the administration of electoral forms and transparency in candidate declarations. By implementing the digital filing system from the specified date, the Commission aims to modernize electoral processes while adhering to existing constitutional and legal frameworks.

The changes are expected to apply uniformly across all elections conducted under the Commission's purview, affecting candidates and parties filing documentation during subsequent electoral cycles.
