The Election Commission of India has initiated disciplinary action against officials involved in irregularities discovered in the voter list for the Sadar assembly segment in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit district. The commission has directed the immediate suspension of Mayank Goswami and Hemant Chaudhary, both officers of SDM rank, over their alleged role in the voter roll discrepancies.
The action underscores the poll body's commitment to maintaining the integrity of electoral rolls ahead of elections. Voter list irregularities have been a persistent concern in electoral processes, with potential implications for the sanctity of the democratic process.
In a parallel development, the commission has also ordered the addition of charges under Section 198 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Anil Kumar, a computer operator, in an FIR already filed in connection with the matter. The specific nature of the irregularities in the voter list has not been disclosed in official statements.
The Pilibhit district administration is expected to file a detailed compliance report with the Election Commission regarding the corrective measures undertaken to rectify the voter roll anomalies and prevent similar incidents in future electoral exercises.
