Election officials given discretion on 3.83 lakh 'Others' category voters

Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant EROs (AEROs) have been granted discretionary powers to handle approximately 3.83 lakh voters currently classified under the 'Others' category on electoral rolls across Indian constituencies.

Under the revised guidelines, officials can now mark such electors as either 'Found OK' or 'Found Not Eligible' without scheduling mandatory hearings. Previously, the process required confirmatory procedures that were time-consuming and procedurally rigid.

Alternatively, EROs and AEROs retain the option to conduct formal hearings if they deem it necessary for specific cases. This dual approach allows electoral authorities to expedite the verification process for straightforward cases while preserving the opportunity for detailed inquiry when warranted.

The 'Others' classification typically encompasses voters whose eligibility status is ambiguous or whose documentation requires clarification. The new directive aims to streamline electoral roll maintenance while ensuring administrative efficiency without compromising electoral integrity.

This administrative measure is expected to facilitate faster resolution of pending voter registration cases and improve the overall accuracy of electoral rolls across the country.
