Electoral Commission excludes West Bengal cases from re-enrolment drive
The Electoral Commission will not include West Bengal cases currently pending before appellate tribunals in its post-SIR re-enrolment drive. Officials warn the decision could establish two separate pathways for voter re-registration.

The Electoral Commission has decided to exclude West Bengal cases that are pending appellate tribunal review from its ongoing re-enrolment initiative following the Supplementary Integrated Review (SIR). This exclusion is expected to create complexity in the voter registration process across the state.
According to officials familiar with the matter, the decision will result in two distinct re-enrolment routes operating simultaneously in West Bengal. Cases before the tribunals will continue through their respective judicial processes, while other eligible citizens can apply directly through Form 6 applications submitted to Electoral Registration Officers.
The bifurcated approach raises concerns about administrative coordination and voter accessibility. Officials acknowledged that maintaining two parallel systems could lead to confusion among voters seeking to update their registration status, particularly in cases where appellate proceedings are protracted.
The Electoral Commission has not provided a timeline for resolving tribunal cases or clarified how voters will be informed about which pathway applies to their circumstances. The decision underscores ongoing challenges in implementing the SIR re-enrolment process across India's states, where varying legal and administrative frameworks complicate uniform implementation.
