Electric car makers face new localisation rules starting Tuesday

Electric vehicle manufacturers in India are bracing for the implementation of new localisation requirements for critical powertrain components, effective from Tuesday. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has formally petitioned the government for a seven-month extension to the compliance deadline, citing significant disruptions in the global supply of rare-earth magnets. These materials are essential for manufacturing high-performance traction motors, and their scarcity has created challenges for domestic producers attempting to meet the new thresholds.

The localisation push is part of India's broader strategy to develop a robust domestic electric vehicle ecosystem and reduce import dependence. However, the abrupt implementation has caught manufacturers unprepared, as securing alternative suppliers and establishing local production capabilities require considerable time and investment.
