Elvis Presley's $65,000 Gift Helped Build USS Arizona Memorial

Elvis Presley's generosity played a key role in establishing one of America's most significant war memorials. In 1961, the legendary musician raised $65,000 toward the USS Arizona Memorial, a major contribution to the project's completion that year.

The 184-foot structure was dedicated in 1962 and stands as a solemn tribute to the lives lost when the USS Arizona sank during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The memorial spans directly above the sunken battleship, which lies on the seabed of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

More than 900 crew members perished aboard the USS Arizona during the December 7, 1941 attack, making it one of the deadliest incidents in the ship's history. Many of these servicemen remain entombed within the vessel, which serves as their final resting place.

Presley's contribution underscored the widespread public support for honoring those who died in the attack. The memorial has since become one of the most visited historical sites in the United States, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who come to pay respects to the fallen sailors.
