Emirates seeks additional traffic rights for Navi Mumbai operations

Emirates will only consider establishing flight operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport if India grants the airline additional traffic rights and increased seat allocations under existing bilateral air service agreements, a senior executive of the Dubai-based carrier has indicated.

The statement underscores the carrier's position that its commercial viability at the newly operational airport depends on regulatory support from Indian authorities. Emirates, which currently operates extensive services across India, has flagged capacity constraints as a limiting factor in its expansion plans to western India.

Navi Mumbai International Airport, located approximately 30 kilometres south of Mumbai, began commercial operations in October 2023. The facility is positioned as a major aviation hub to relieve congestion at Mumbai's existing Bombay High School International Airport.

Airlines operating in India operate under bilateral agreements that govern frequency of flights, aircraft capacity, and designated routes. The availability of these traffic rights often determines carriers' decisions to launch services at new airports or expand existing operations.

Emirati carriers have historically played a significant role in connecting India to the Middle East and beyond. The outcome of negotiations between Emirates and Indian aviation authorities regarding traffic rights allocations for Navi Mumbai operations will be closely watched by other international carriers considering similar expansion plans.
