Employers urge advance notice, consultation on special holidays

The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers Association (FMBA) have stressed the importance of fair consideration regarding the operational implications for private sector businesses when special holidays are declared.

Both groups emphasised that advance notice and proper consultation mechanisms should be established before any announcements are made official. The MEF noted that sudden declarations without prior discussion create challenges for companies in planning their operations and managing resources effectively.

The FMBA highlighted that unexpected holiday announcements hamper small and medium enterprises' ability to supervise operations and maintain cash flow management. The association warned that such abrupt decisions can disrupt business continuity and workforce scheduling, particularly for manufacturing and production-dependent sectors.

The employer groups have called on relevant government agencies to adopt a more consultative approach, allowing businesses sufficient time to prepare and adjust their operational calendars accordingly. They stressed that dialogue between government and the private sector prior to announcement would help mitigate negative impacts on business performance and employee management.

The appeals come as Malaysia continues to balance the observance of public holidays with the operational needs of the nation's private sector economy.
