Employers urge caution on minimum wage hikes in 2027 budget

Employer associations have urged policymakers to balance worker welfare with business sustainability as Malaysia prepares its 2027 budget, warning that abrupt minimum wage increases could strain small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The Malaysian Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Micsea) has highlighted the vulnerability of SMEs to sudden labour cost spikes, noting that many businesses operatingon thin profit margins may struggle to absorb significant wage increases without cutting jobs or raising prices.
The timing of the appeal comes as the government reviews wage policies ahead of next year's fiscal planning. While acknowledging the need to support workers' purchasing power, employer representatives have stressed the importance of phased, predictable wage adjustments that allow businesses time to adjust operational costs.
The issue reflects a broader tension in Malaysia's economic policy between protecting worker incomes and maintaining business competitiveness. Officials are expected to weigh these competing interests as they finalise budget proposals in the coming months.
