English Village Knits Fake Police to Combat Speeding at Accident Hotspot

In an unconventional bid to improve road safety, villagers in Fillongley have installed hand-crafted displays designed to deter speeding drivers at a notorious accident junction. The campaign emerged after at least 11 traffic accidents were recorded at the site over a four-year period, prompting residents to take matters into their own hands.

The initiative involved four months of community effort to knit life-sized traffic officers, fake speed cameras, and roadside figures—a project reflecting local frustration with the persistent safety hazard. The displays were installed on October 13 and have reportedly encouraged some drivers to reduce speed as they approach the junction.

However, the unconventional safety measures have not been without complications. One of the knitted RAF officer figures has since been stolen, diminishing the display's overall impact. Despite the creative intervention and apparent success in slowing traffic, residents continue to press for permanent, officially-sanctioned road safety improvements from authorities.

The case highlights the tension between local community action and formal infrastructure development, with Fillongley residents demonstrating both initiative and exasperation as they wait for government-backed solutions to address the junction's long-standing safety concerns.
