Environmental groups vow action over Pallikaranai Marshland construction

Environmental organisations have issued a stark warning that they will escalate demonstrations against construction work at Pallikaranai Marshland unless authorities stop the ongoing development activities immediately. The wetland, situated on the outskirts of Chennai, is recognised for its ecological significance and serves as a crucial habitat for migratory birds and aquatic species.

The Pallikaranai Marshland, spanning over 1,600 hectares, has faced repeated threats from urban expansion and infrastructure projects over the past two decades. Conservation groups argue that construction activities in the area violate environmental protection norms and threaten the delicate ecosystem that has already been reduced from its original size due to previous development.

Activists contend that the marshland plays a vital role in the region's water management system and biodiversity conservation. They have called on state and local authorities to enforce strict compliance with environmental regulations and impose a complete moratorium on any new construction within the marshland's boundaries.
