EPFO 3.0 rollout pushed back; gig worker benefits face further delays

The long-awaited EPFO 3.0 system, designed to expand pension and social security protections to gig economy, platform-based, unorganised sector and construction workers, faces a significant implementation delay. Sources indicate the comprehensive digital overhaul will require a minimum of 12 months following the conclusion of the tendering process before becoming operational.

The postponement marks another setback in efforts to bring India's vast informal workforce under structured social security frameworks. Gig and platform workers, numbering in the tens of millions, have remained largely outside traditional employee benefit schemes despite their growing contribution to the economy.

EPFO officials have indicated that the tendering phase is progressing as scheduled, but the subsequent development, testing and deployment phases of the modernised platform will extend well into the coming years. The upgraded system is intended to simplify enrolment procedures and streamline benefit disbursement across multiple categories of non-traditional workers.

The delay underscores persistent challenges in bridging coverage gaps in India's social security infrastructure. Worker advocacy groups have expressed concern that extended timelines continue to leave millions of informal sector employees without adequate retirement and health protections. Government authorities have committed to expediting the rollout once tendering concludes, though no concrete implementation deadline has been announced.
